The Kyoto store of outdoor clothing brand The North Face (71 Daikokucho, Yanagi-no-baba Higashi-iru, Rokkaku-dori, Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto City) has been selected as an outstanding outdoor advertisement in the Kyoto Landscape Award Outdoor Advertising category. A press representative from Goldwin, which distributes the brand, commented, "The exterior features a traditional townhouse-style design that blends seamlessly into the Kyoto landscape. Large openings reveal an interior space with natural stone pillars and wood-grain fixtures, lending a natural feel to the space. We believe these features were key to its success." The Kyoto store opened in April 2009. This is the first time the awards, sponsored by Kyoto City, have been presented. The awards are divided into three categories: Outdoor Advertising, Architectural Landscape, and Landscape Creation Activities, with the aim of honoring works that contribute to the creation of an urban landscape that should be passed on to future generations and civic-led landscape-building activities. For the first time, submissions were accepted for the Outdoor Advertising category. From approximately 800 applications, 44 outdoor advertisements with excellent design, 10 Mayor's Awards, 2 Kyoto Design Association Awards, 31 Excellence Awards, and 52 historically designed outdoor advertisements were selected. In the fashion industry, the United Arrows Kyoto store was also designated as an outdoor advertisement with excellent design.
