
Film director Sofia Coppola was born in the United States on May 14, 1971. She is the daughter of film director Francis Ford Coppola and her brother is fellow film director Roman Coppola. Her cousins include actors Nicolas Cage and Jason Schwartzman, and her niece is film director Gia Coppola. She began her career as an actress in films such as "The Godfather" (1972) as a child, but made her directorial debut in 1998 with "Rick the Star." She subsequently directed films such as "The Virgin Suicides" (1999), "Lost in Translation" (2003), and "Marie Antoinette" (2006). During high school, she aspired to be a fashion designer and studied under Karl Lagerfeld. After participating in the production of a fashion show for X-girl, a brand founded by Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and her friend Daisy von Furth, she launched her own brand, MILK FED., in 1995.
She also worked as a model, appearing on the cover of Italian Vogue, photographed by Steven Meisel, and in a MARC JACOBS advertising campaign. In 2008, she appeared alongside her father in a Louis Vuitton advertisement, photographed by Annie Leibovitz.
She is also a photographer, having shot for the fashion pages of Vogue and W magazines, and has worked on advertisements for Japanese brands VIVAYOU and PARCO.
