Founded in Bologna, Italy in 1927, Furla has reinterpreted the traditional Japanese technique of suminagashi (suminagashi), naming it "shikinagashi" (color flow). In collaboration with the internationally active artist collective DWS JAPAN (Dirty Workers Studio Japan), Furla has produced leather goods using their unique "shikinagashi" technique. These items will be on sale for a limited time at the Hankyu Men's Tokyo pop-up store from November 24 to December 7, 2021.

By incorporating the "color flow" technique into Furla leather items, items with beautiful dyed patterns unique to DWS have been created. All of the approximately 130 pieces produced this time are handmade, designed with meticulous attention to detail, and delicately marbling. This makes each item unique, a one-of-a-kind masterpiece.
With a history spanning more than 90 years, Furla has evolved while inheriting tradition, adhering to its commitment to materials and craftsmanship, and offering a variety of collections featuring beautiful Italian colors and use of color and contemporary, sophisticated designs. DWS, which carries on traditional Japanese culture while incorporating innovative ideas and techniques, felt a commonality with Furla as a group that shares the same philosophy, leading to the realization of this collaboration.

DWS JAPAN What is (DirtyWorkersStudioJapan)?
They are a group of artists based in Tokyo who are active both domestically and internationally, and who have created a unique style that improves and reinterprets the traditional Japanese technique of "suminagashi" and calls it "shikinagashi."
DWS Interview Comments
How did you feel when you received the offer?
DWS "Usually, our style is more street-oriented, so this collaboration was a challenging one for us, as it is a premium luxury brand and it was our first time painting leather products."
How was it trying your hand at painting leather for the first time?
DWS "Until now, it was possible to paint leather, but it was difficult to get the paint to stick so that it wouldn't peel off, which had put us off making leather items. This time, we started by wondering how we could create a coating that wouldn't peel off, so that was particularly difficult."
How was it creating the collaborative piece with Furla?
DWS "This time, we applied marbling to match existing products, so it felt like we were painting each piece individually to create a design. First, we started by carefully masking off the areas that weren't to be painted. Furla had a strong preference for colors and patterns, so we incorporated that while keeping in mind that it was a men's line and a style that matched the shape of each product. We then added our own style to each piece and painted it."
