September sales figures for all five department stores show positive results, with fall fashion trending favorably

Oct 3, 2013
On the 1st, five major department stores announced their September sales figures. All of them surpassed the same month last year. The three-day weekend at the beginning of the month was hit by inclement weather, including a typhoon, but the drop in temperatures boosted sales of fall fashion.

Mitsukoshi Isetan Holdings saw an 8.4% increase compared to the previous year. Flagship stores all maintained strong performances, with Isetan Shinjuku Main Store increasing 13%, Mitsukoshi Nihombashi Main Store increasing 9.8%, and Mitsukoshi Ginza Store increasing 11.5%. Isetan Shinjuku Main Store and Mitsukoshi Ginza Store both recorded double-digit growth for the second consecutive month. Fall fashion dominated sales. Coats and jackets made from wool, down, and leather, as well as sweaters and skirts, sold well. Women's accessories also performed well, with fall/winter items like boots and stoles also selling well.

H2O Retailing's company-wide sales increased 19.9% year-on-year, exceeding the previous month's (19.1%) growth. Hankyu Umeda Main Store increased 96.1%, Hankyu Men's Osaka increased 7%, and the Hankyu Main Store, which houses both stores, increased 77.0%. This marks the 11th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

J. Front Retailing's sales increased 2.0% year-on-year at Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores, and the department store business as a whole increased 1.9%. Despite the negative impact of the typhoon, sales of fall fashion items such as women's jackets, knitwear, and pumps were strong. Luxury brands, watches, and jewelry also performed well. By store, the Nagoya store, which continues to benefit from renovations of its food floor, saw its 11th consecutive month of year-on-year growth.

Takashimaya's sales increased 2.5% year-on-year for the store alone, and 2.6% year-on-year for the store alone and its 18 domestic department store subsidiaries combined. This marks the second consecutive month of year-on-year increases. By product type, sales exceeded the previous year in a wide range of categories, centered on fashion items such as men's clothing, men's accessories, women's clothing, and women's accessories, as well as selected clothing accessories, kimonos, and children's products.

Sogo & Seibu saw a 2.2% increase year-on-year for all 24 Sogo & Seibu stores combined. Seibu Ikebukuro Main Store alone saw an increase of 3.2%. This is also the second consecutive month of year-on-year increases for all 24 stores combined. In addition to women's and men's clothing, where autumn fashion is booming, jewelry and art also remain strong.
