Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop "NADiff." This week's recommendation is "Kagoshima Makoto's Book." It's introduced by NADiff Aichi, our Aichi/Nagoya branch (Aichi Arts Center B2F, 1-13-2 Higashisakura, Higashi-ku, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture). ■ "Kagoshima Makoto's Book" Pottery artist Makoto Kagoshima, who began full-scale pottery production in 2002 and has captivated many with his vessels decorated with plant and animal motifs, has published a collection of his works, "Kagoshima Makoto's Pottery Book." This book features approximately 260 pottery pieces, from his early works to his latest, that have rarely been photographed because, "if I were to record them, I would be tempted to imitate them in my next creation." This book is a valuable record of visits to 20 ceramic owners around the world, each photographed individually. Each piece is organized by individual collection, revealing the individual's unique selection, usage, and appreciation for their creations. The interview at the end of the book offers a glimpse into Kagoshima's personality, as he discusses his path to becoming a ceramic artist, his daily routine, his approach to ceramics, and his feelings toward his future owners. The design was handled by Kei Maeda, who also handled the art direction for the "Kagoshima Mutsumi Design Exhibition" (dionel, Aoyama) and the product design for ZUAN & ZOKEI items. Kagoshima has also collaborated with Finnish textile manufacturer LAPUAN KANKURIT, and NADIFF Aichi will be hosting a Kagoshima Mutsumi fair during the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art's "Finland Design" exhibition (April 7–May 28). In addition to this book, the brand will also offer stationery, fabrics, tableware, and the book "Makoto Kagoshima Ceramics" (2017/Chriots on Fire).
