Arai Sara unveiled its 2014 Spring/Summer collection on the 17th. Designer Arai Sara. The 2014 Spring/Summer theme, "Fantasy," was performed by 42 figures in the Japanese garden of the Meiji Memorial Hall, surrounded by pine trees. The collection featured a combination of different materials, such as stiff, linen-like fabrics and soft, flowing fabrics. The collection centered on linear silhouettes in vibrant green, blue, and black colorways. Also featured were satin and chiffon pieces with a black sunflower print on fabrics featuring faint gradations of blue, green, and yellow. "The beautiful, fuzzy colors are more delicately produced by machine, so we machine-dyed them. Then, we hand-printed the sunflower pattern, which allows for depth and three-dimensionality," explained Arai. Arai's attention to detail extends beyond the dyeing to the fabric itself. The white and black jackets are made entirely from washi paper. The material has a crisp, Japanese feel, is breathable, and is washable and ironable. The green and blue jackets are made from a blend of half washi paper and half silk. The see-through items are wool. "I proposed a fusion of the machine technology that humanity has evolved with the traditional techniques that have existed since ancient times. Last season, I came across a factory in Kyoto that uses both machine technology and the artisanal techniques of hand-printing, and it changed my perception that 'machine-made = mass-produced.' In today's world, we sometimes listen to music on stereo, and sometimes to it in an orchestra. I incorporated the image of such elegant moments in a life where the boundaries between 'nature and artificiality' have disappeared into the theme of 'Fantaisie.'"
