Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store is selling a wide variety of Japanese and Western sweets in its basement food stores ahead of the spring cherry blossom viewing season. The store boasts a uniquely Japanese sensibility, one that subtly incorporates seasonal elements into daily life, and has created a selection of products that are pleasing to both the eye and the palate.
Eitaro Sohonpo, a long-established Japanese confectionery shop, is selling "Kuromame Daifuku Sakura" (250 yen each), a small bean daifuku filled with mugwort and cherry blossom bean paste. The subtle saltiness of the salted cherry leaves enhances the elegant sweetness of the bean paste. Tokyo/Ginza Matsuzaki Senbei's "Edo Tile Calendar" (1,000 yen for a box of 8) is hand-painted by artisans, and features a Nihonbashi design, making it a Nihonbashi exclusive. Other items on offer include "Sakura Shoro" (2,800 yen per box) from Kyoto's Kameya Tomonaga, a colorful assortment of treats including cherry blossom-shaped shōro (traditional Japanese sweets) and butterfly-shaped dried sweets, and "Castella Nihonbashi Sakura" (1,500 yen per box), an original castella cake from Bunmeido Nihonbashi featuring a Nihonbashi and cherry blossom design. Among the Western-style sweets featuring cherry blossoms are "Awazakura" (520 yen per piece), a rare cheesecake made with cherry blossom paste and wrapped in cherry blossom-flavored white wine jelly. Patisserie Seiyo Ginza's new spring offerings are noteworthy. Patisserie Moncher, famous for its Dojima Roll, also offers the popular "Sakura Roll" (1,500 yen per roll), a roll of cherry blossom-studded dough rolled up with milk-flavored Moncher Chantilly (the cream from Dojima Roll) and cherry blossom-flavored custard cream. Joan's Sakura Anpan (220 yen each) is made by wrapping cherry blossom bean paste in bread dough and baking it in a cherry blossom motif, with a crispy crust on top for a satisfying texture. Miyakoshi Coffee, located on the second basement floor of the new building of the same store, offers the takeout-only "Arranged Coffee Sakura," a coffee flavored with cherry blossom flavor and cherry blossom-colored sugar. Both are available as "Only MI" products, available exclusively at Isetan Mitsukoshi.
