Ayako Suwa's Food Creation & Tokyo University Tasting Event Held at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Apr 24, 2014

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the opening of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, an event titled "Taste of Curiosity: Museum of Curiosity Food Creation + The University Museum of Tokyo" will be held. The event will run from April 26th to March next year.

This event, which explores "what a museum is" and "what museums should be like in the future," is organized by Food Creation, led by Ayako Suwa, and The University Museum of Tokyo. Returning to the museum's roots of "curiosity," the unique program will focus on the theme of "taste."

In addition, the museum's "Youth Dream Challenge Art Program," which began in 2007, will be further expanded this year. Recruiting members from a wide range of generations, not just young people, the program will be implemented in collaboration with artists.

From April 26th to October 13th, Exhibition Room 13 will feature a "Small Room for Tasting Curiosity," showcasing intriguing ingredients such as "things that seem inedible but you'd like to try" and "things you'd like to try at least once." The program will be updated regularly, aiming to create "new flavors" using the collected ingredients. The daily menu will be posted on the door of the room and also published on the museum's official website. From October 4th to October 13th, the "Feast of Curiosity" will be held in exhibition rooms 1 through 6. This event will feature a "Wunderkammer" (Wonder Room), displaying ingredients collected in the "Feast of Curiosity" and new flavors. A unique feature of this event is that visitors can not only see the ingredients, but also taste them. Additionally, new menu items developed in the "Feast of Curiosity" and "Feast of Curiosity" will be showcased at restaurants around town. Suwa's signature style of "guerrilla restaurants"—those that suddenly appear in unlikely places and disappear after a few days—is expected to lead to new developments. The museum is currently recruiting participants for this event. For details on application requirements, please refer to the official website. An information session about the event will be held in the lecture hall on April 27th, and a workshop for members will also be held from April 29th to 30th.

Suwa Ayako is from Ishikawa Prefecture. After graduating from Kanazawa College of Art, she began her "food creation" activities in 2006, proposing new values for food. In addition to carrying out projects with companies and local governments around the world in places like Singapore, Paris, and Berlin, she is also active as an artist.

The University Museum, The University of Tokyo was established in 1996. It is Japan's first "university museum" and is both a research and educational institution and an experimental museum that proposes "new forms of academic work," such as the "mobile museum."
