Hajime Tachibana's art piece USB, "Monaco," released last September as a limited edition consisting of six puzzle pieces, including one with a USB, will be re-released on April 16th as a single-piece version with a USB.
"Monaco" is an album of fonts and music compiled by musician and graphic designer Tachibana on a USB. The USB includes "Monaco Regular" and "Monaco Light," Tachibana's redesigns of the font "Monaco" by Susan Kare, a leading designer of early Macintosh computers, as well as digital liner notes, an installation showcasing 100 examples of how "Monaco" can be used, and music.
The music features 13 tracks (including one bonus track) featuring guest artists close to Tachibana, including Shinichi Osawa, Hiroshi Fujiwara, and Kan Takagi. This marks Tachibana's first music release in approximately six years since his previous album, "THE CHILL." The techno team "TECHIES," originally formed for this album by Tachibana, Takeshi Fujii, and Yoshifumi Iio, also reunited. The album also includes four rare live recordings from 1977 by the legendary techno-pop group "Plastics," of which Tachibana was a member. Priced at ¥4,000. Tachibana formed Plastics in 1976 and played guitar. Their music was released worldwide on Island Records and they toured the world. He began his solo career in 1982. He is known as one of the figures who influenced street culture, including hip-hop, in the 1980s and beyond. As a graphic designer, he has created record jackets, video clips, and stage art for artists such as Yukihiro Takahashi, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Akiko Yano, and Talking Heads, in addition to his own work. He won the ADC Grand Prize in 1991.
