Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the village of Vinci in the Republic of Florence. He died on May 2, 1519.
Around 1466, he apprenticed under the artist Verrocchio and distinguished himself in his workshop. His works from this period include "The Baptism of Christ," a collaboration with Verrocchio, and the bronze sculpture "David." He subsequently moved between Florence, Milan, and Rome.
From 1482, he served Ludovico Maria Sforza, Duke of Milan, and painted "The Virgin of the Rocks," "The Last Supper," and "The Mona Lisa." He was commissioned by the Duke to undertake various projects, including the design of the dome of Milan Cathedral, equestrian statues, and maps. He is now known as the "Universal Man" in recognition of his achievements in these diverse fields. He spent his final years in the service of King Francis I of France, living in a French mansion bestowed upon him. He died in May 1519 at the age of 67. A perfectionist, he invented the technique of "sfumato" (blurring), which had a profound influence on subsequent painters. He was also known for his slow painting speed, often stopping mid-way once completion was in sight, resulting in many unfinished works. His achievements continue to influence not only the art world but also many other fields, and he is frequently featured in manga and films. In the fashion world, Jean Paul Gaultier used the Mona Lisa as a print on a tulle top. Yasushi Ezumi's Spring/Summer 2013 collection is themed around Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man.
