Following on from Spring/Summer 2014, COMME des GARÇONS' 2014-2015 Autumn/Winter collection showcased clothing that was the polar opposite of real clothing. The theme was "monsters." "I felt that the shape of a monster was the perfect way to express these deep emotions, like fear and rage I'd never experienced," designer Rei Kawakubo said this season. True to her words, the collection featured a variety of grotesque creatures, including styles covered in tubes that looked like eviscerated organs, oversized tailored jackets, and tops that appeared to be knitted with just the sleeves. Knitwear was used extensively, sewn randomly and knotted to create various monster shapes, including sculpted tops and dresses with only the face removed. The matching leggings also featured a perforated knit print. What is Kawakubo trying to create? Since last season, her deepest emotions have been transformed into monsters, throwing aside beauty, ugliness, and style, and moving toward a new abstraction.
