The beautiful gradation of tatami mats and the fusion of foreign cultures create the "Tatami Table"

May 12, 2017

Designer Nada Debs has created the "Tatami Tables" furniture series, boldly designed using tatami mats. Combining vibrantly gradated tatami mats with wood, the series can be used as both a bench and a table, allowing designers to enjoy the pieces in a variety of ways to suit their lifestyle.

Nada, the creator, has a unique background: originally from Lebanon, she grew up in Japan and later moved to the United States and the United Kingdom, where she built her career. She studied design in the United States and established a furniture design and manufacturing company in the UK. However, perhaps driven by her soul, or perhaps called to Lebanon, she decided to return to her home country. Upon returning to Beirut, Lebanon, Nada noticed a near-total lack of furniture designed for the modern Middle East. She founded her company, East & East, and has continued to create products that combine Eastern traditions with minimalism.

Nada and East & East, whose mission is to celebrate Eastern craftsmanship through contemporary design, are committed to producing their products by hand with care. They believe that combining the high level of craftsmanship of Middle Eastern artisans with new materials can create powerful designs. The "Tatami Table" series is part of the Now and Zen collection, which also includes other Japanese-style items such as stools inspired by kimono patterns. Nada's works were exhibited at this year's Milan Design Week, where they garnered a lot of attention.
