From ancient Chinese and Korean ceramics to everyday crafts, an exhibition focusing on Kanjiro Kawai is being held 50 years after his death

Sep 2, 2016

An exhibition focusing on the ceramic artist Kawai Kanjiro, "50 Years After His Death: Kawai Kanjiro Exhibition - Now, Where the Past Blooms, Now, Full of Buds of the Future," will be held at the "Eki" Kyoto Museum of Art from September 15th to October 23rd. Kawai Kanjiro was a ceramic artist who participated in drafting the "Japan Folk Crafts Museum Founding Prospectus" and promoted the folk craft movement with Yanagi Muneyoshi and Hamada Shoji, leading many craftspeople. Since his first solo exhibition in 1921, he had been well-received for his highly technical works based on the techniques of ancient Chinese and Korean ceramics. However, he gradually began to question his own approach to pottery, and after becoming friends with Yanagi Muneyoshi, he completely changed his style and began producing powerful works that emphasized practicality. After the war, he established his own distinctive style, characterized by a profound yet varied style using vibrant glazes. He also developed free and original artistic expressions that flowed from within, unconstrained by practicality, and his outstanding artistry continues to be highly acclaimed both at home and abroad, even 50 years after his death. The exhibition will feature approximately 150 pieces, including ceramics, woodcarvings, calligraphy, and furnishings, centered around pieces from the collection of the Kawai Kanjiro Memorial Museum, his former home in Kyoto. Through these works, we will trace the full scope of Kawai Kanjiro's work and his profound spiritual world. Related events are also planned to be held during the exhibition period.
