Art that captures invisible "sound." Kohei Nawa, Masakatsu Takagi, YEN TOWN BAND, and Salyu also participate in the Kyoto Okazaki Music Festival

Aug 12, 2016

The Kyoto Okazaki Music Festival, "OKAZAKI LOOPS," will be held on September 3rd and 4th (with a pre-event on the 2nd) at facilities in Okazaki, Kyoto, and the surrounding area. "OKAZAKI LOOPS" is a new type of music festival centered around the Okazaki area, centered around the ROHM Theatre Kyoto, which reopened in January of this year. Led by five directors—ballet dancer Yasuyuki Shuto, musician Masakatsu Takagi, contemporary artist Kohei Nawa, Kyoto Symphony Orchestra Principal Conductor Junichi Hirokami, and Masataka Hosoo of the long-established Nishijin textile manufacturer Hosoo—the festival will feature a diverse program including live music and dance performances, talk shows, workshops, art exhibitions, and a food court. Details of the special exhibition, "Capturing Sound," one of the programs, have now been announced. The exhibition will feature works by seven artists who capture the intangible element of "sound" as various materials and phenomena, displayed on the ROHM Theatre Kyoto Promenade. The lineup includes a sound installation in which sound particles bounce and undulate in the darkness, creating a new auditory experience that makes the sound phenomena seem almost living. It also includes ice records made by freezing water in a silicone record mold, a music interface using paper with sheet music printed on it, and next-generation speakers that display lyrics in sync with the music. Also scheduled for "OKAZAKI AMBIENT" on September 4th will be special guest appearances by Shuta Hasunuma, Taeji Sawai, and Christian Fennesz, who will appear in the "ALMA MUSIC BOX: Melody of a Dying Star Concert with Kyoto Symphony Orchestra" at Miyako Messe. A pre-event party will also be held on the 2nd. The "SYMPHONIC EVOLUTION SPECIAL - YEN TOWN BAND ORCHESTRA" will be formed for one night only at the ROHM Theatre Kyoto Main Hall. You can enjoy a luxurious stage performance featuring a collaboration between the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra and YEN TOWN BAND, a band produced by Kobayashi Takeshi, as well as Salyu, Fujimaki Ryota, and others.
