"i'm green," the first department store to offer a permanent purchase and collection service, opens at Isetan Shinjuku

Oct 1, 2021

i'm green (hereinafter "I'm Green"), which opened a test store on the 7th floor of the new wing of Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Main Store last year as a service that purchases and collects items that customers no longer use and connects them to future purchases, will be fully launched with the opening of Isetan Shinjuku Store on October 1, 2021.

In response to growing environmental awareness among customers, the service aims to realize a circular economy and also aims to create and promote new purchasing experiences by having the department store itself take charge of after-sales support.

Specifically, we will accept clothing, bags, watches, jewelry, antiques, art objects, etc., and our dedicated Isetan Mitsukoshi stylists (sales staff) will consult with you and propose the best solution. We also have a method for recycling some of the clothing we collect, so we can responsibly send our customers' precious items to a place where they can be passed on to the future.

In addition, with the opening of our Shinjuku store, we have begun a test trial of handling furniture and home appliances for some customers. In order to eliminate the option of "throwing away," we will expand the range of items we handle and the ways in which we utilize resources, and will continue to play a part in our sustainability activities in conjunction with our corporate policy of "connecting a sustainable society and times."

Background and Purpose of the Initiative

Isetan Mitsukoshi aims to be a retail group with a "special" department store at its core that enriches the lives of its customers. In its sustainability activities, one of its key strategies is to connect people with the community and foster a sustainable society.

A sustainability survey of approximately 17,000 Mitsukoshi Isetan online and app members conducted in December last year also revealed interest in clothing collection initiatives and expectations for the use of sustainable resources, demonstrating that customers' environmental awareness is on the rise.

Department stores have traditionally strengthened their connections with customers through sales, but by providing post-sale support for the treasured items of customers, they are helping to realize a circular economy. Furthermore, by leveraging the "security and trust" that Mitsukoshi Isetan has cultivated to date, we aim to further increase engagement with customers by providing attentive customer service while protecting important customer information, and to create and promote a new purchasing experience that can only be achieved by operating a department store ourselves.

We are considering expanding the range of items that can be handled in the future. We are also exploring various ways to evolve this initiative, including collaborating with external organizations such as educational institutions to remake and upcycle items that we are unable to purchase and have taken over. We will also apply the Isetan Mitsukoshi filter to transform items into new value rather than discarding them.
