Kiriko exhibition featuring around 100 pieces, many of which will be shown in Japan for the first time, to be held in Shiodome in October

Sep 29, 2014

"George de Chirico: Transitions and Recurrences," tracing the creative footsteps of painter Giorgio de Chirico, will be held at the Panasonic Shiodome Museum in Shinbashi, Tokyo, from October 25th. The exhibition will feature approximately 100 works from Italian museums, private collections, and Japanese collections, centered around the former collection of de Chirico's widow, Isabella de Chirico. Approximately 80% of the works, representing each period of the artist's career, including oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, and sculptures, will be shown in Japan for the first time. Related events will also be held, including an opening lecture by Jacqueline Munck, curator of the exhibition and curatorial director of the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, at the Maison de France-Japonaise in Ebisu, Tokyo, on October 25th at 2:00 PM, and an art talk by art critic Goro Yamada on the appeal of De Chirico (capacity 200, free) at the 5th floor hall of the Panasonic Shiodome Building on November 14th at 2:00 PM. De Chirico was born in Greece in 1888 to Italian parents. He spent his youth in Munich, influenced by the fantasy paintings of artists such as Arnold Böcklin and the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche. In 1911, he moved to Paris and had a major influence on the Surrealists with his "metaphysical painting." After World War I, his interest in classical painting led to a major change in his style, but in his later years he returned to the metaphysical paintings of his early days.
