"Zakka Exhibition" is a special exhibition directed by Naoto Fukasawa that focuses on the appeal of miscellaneous goods

Feb 10, 2016

The "Zakka" exhibition, focusing on the design of miscellaneous goods, will run from February 26 to June 5 at 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT in Tokyo's Minato Ward. Directed by product designer Naoto Fukasawa, the exhibition focuses on the appeal of miscellaneous goods, bringing joy to our lives through the actions and experiences of searching, selecting, buying, using, displaying, and combining them. The exhibition defines "Zakka" as "design that blends seamlessly into our everyday living spaces and adds a touch of color," exploring the environment, sensibility, appearance, and design surrounding miscellaneous goods. Illustrator and graphic designer Mayumi Kawahara's "Zakka Mandala," which conveys Japan's unique culture and sensibility through secondary idiomatic phrases containing the Japanese character "Zakka," and "Zakka Peddler Installation," a collaboration between Matsunoya, a wholesaler of miscellaneous goods, and designer Norihiko Terayama, recreates the image of a peddler from a Meiji-era cart selling everyday items using modern everyday items. The exhibition planning team and illustrator Miyake Ryuto will create a "Timeline of Miscellaneous Goods and Lifestyle History," which will explore the roots of miscellaneous goods in Japan's historical context. Additionally, the exhibition will feature miscellaneous goods that capture the unique worldviews and atmospheres of professionals active in a variety of fields, including stylist Okao Miyoko, art director Hirabayashi Naomi, and Kobayashi Kazuto (Roundabout, OUTBOUND). Related programs include a "Miscellaneous Goods Exhibition Opening Event" featuring Fukasawa Naoto and Nagaoka Kenmei of D&DEPARTMENT, which will be held from 2 p.m. on February 27, as well as a talk event. On March 26th from 2pm to 4pm there will be a "Chat with the Zakka Exhibition Planning Team", on April 28th from 6pm to 10pm there will be a "21_21 DESIGN NIGHT Special Feature: What to Focus On" featuring Zakka Exhibition exhibitors, participating artists, and the planning team, and on May 14th from 2pm to 4pm there will be a talk called "What I Want, What I Have" by buyer Yamada Yu and Yamamoto Kensuke, CEO of the web service "Sumally".

In addition, during the event, a "Zakka Store" will be open in the shop space on the first floor of the main venue, selling miscellaneous goods selected by participants and exhibitors, with a focus on Fukasawa Naoto.
