OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH, the creative director behind Kanye West, presented its 2016-17 Fall/Winter collection for the first time in runway format at Paris Men's Fashion Week.
Off-White, a leader in the "luxury street" genre with graphic and logo-inspired pieces, boasts a core following with items selling out immediately in Japan and lines forming at stores on the day new arrivals arrive. This season's theme for the collection was "You cut me off." The collection featured basic pieces that reassembled various cut motifs.
Both men's and women's collections featured oversized, minimalist silhouettes, with the draping of the fabric a key focus. The long canvas coat was yellow. The collection was presented in vivid colors—red, blue, black, and white—and the brand's iconic two-tone signal stripe was featured on the hems of oversized knitwear and on the sleeves of leather blousons. The graphic on the back of the velvet blouson is detachable, creating a wardrobe that is conscious of a wider market.
The theme itself is said to be inspired by Lucio Fontana, a central artist of Italian Spatialism in the 1950s and 60s, who is known for his works that simply involve cutting into white canvases. He influenced Milan's clothing industry during the rapid growth of the 1970s through his collaborations with fashion designers, and is also well known for his connection between Cubism and fashion.
Like Marcelo Burlon, the concept behind this global expansion of American street culture with Made in Italy quality is quite profound.
