MUJI holds exhibition exploring the essence of life through Okinawan "Yachimun" pottery

Feb 26, 2016

The "Hands, Earth, and Fire: Okinawa's Yachimun" exhibition, exploring the essence of life through Okinawa's traditional pottery, "Yachimun," will be held at Open MUJI Tokyo in Yurakucho, Tokyo, from February 26 to April 3.

Due to the economic efficiency of modern industrialization, the distinctive craftsmanship of various regions of Japan, which has been passed down from hand to hand, is at risk of fading away. This exhibition showcases the traditional Okinawan pottery, "Yachimun," which has been passed down through the hands and aspirations of the people in this era. Through the clay, tools, pottery, videos, and photographs from the Yomitanzan Yaki Kitagama kiln, visitors can see the irreplaceable passion for craftsmanship that is close to the lives of the people, and the potters themselves.

A talk event, "Yomitanzan Yaki Kitagama: The Work and Lifestyle," featuring master potter Yoneji Matsuda of Yomitanzan Yaki Kitagama, will be held from 4:30 to 6:00 PM on March 7. From 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm, ahead of the general release of the film "Days of Heaven and Earth" in April, there will be a talk show entitled "Days of Heaven and Earth: From the Film Set" with director Mika Kawase and craft writer Atsuko Tanaka. "Days of Heaven and Earth" is a documentary film that was filmed over the course of three years, following the people working at Kitagama pottery studio in Yachimun Village, Yomitan Village on Okinawa's main island. A preview screening is also scheduled to be held from 3:00 pm to 4:35 pm on March 25th.
