Floral artist Nicolai Bergmann's exhibition "Dento Kaden" (Traditional Flower Transmission) is running from September 22nd to 25th at the Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo in Marunouchi, Tokyo. A preview was held on the 24th, where Nicolai Bergmann himself introduced his works. This exhibition, his first at the Shangri-La Hotel Tokyo in six years, explores the fusion of his own floral art with traditional Japanese crafts and fine art, including works by Living National Treasures. The exhibition features over 50 new pieces inspired by or incorporating the work of various artisans, including ceramic artists, metalworkers, doll makers, and glass artists. Nicolai, who has previously visited various artisans active throughout Japan, commented, "I wanted to create an exhibition that would allow visitors to experience the craftsmanship of each artist through their floral designs." The exhibition features a kosode (short-sleeved kimono) with a peony and flowing water pattern inherited from the Edo period, as well as works using vessels from Nikolai's own collection. The exhibition showcases Nikolai's unique spirit, a deep respect for Japanese aesthetics. The fresh flowers and plants that adorn the crafts range from familiar chestnuts and Japanese pampas grass to the rare pineapple orchid. "Maintaining the fresh flower works throughout the four days of the exhibition was a challenge for me," says Nikolai. Each piece is created through a delicate process, involving hand-tying each chili pepper onto 400 to 500 pieces of wire and gluing each leaf one by one. Two or three people spend a day working on each piece, and a total of about 50 staff members completed the work in one go the day before the exhibition. While the works themselves are ephemeral, they also convey the powerful vitality of plants, allowing visitors to experience Nikolai's new world of beauty, blending Japanese and Western influences. A special museum shop will also be set up at the venue. Special items are also on sale, including a limited edition of the signature flower box "Dento Kaden."
