On April 10th, Valentino unveiled the capsule collection "Valentino Rockstud Untitled" in collaboration with artist Vanessa Beecroft at the New York Academy of Art in New York.
The collection, part of the Pre-Fall 2016 collection, was inspired by the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. Golden studs replace traditional seams, mimicking the Japanese technique of kintsugi. Each piece is numbered from 1 to 12 and labeled on a canvas label.
In a performance at the New York Academy of Art, Vanessa Beecroft artistically interpreted timeless, unisex pieces such as iconic trench coats, crew neck sweaters, white shirts, and pea coats. Regarding the performance, creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli commented, "Through her art, Vanessa has the power to fuse concepts of beauty, reality, perfection, uniqueness, and diversity with a very powerful and modern approach. In the performance, 'personalities' wearing 'uniform' clothes came together and shared a moment, each expressing their own beauty. We hope the same thing will happen to those who wear this collection."
Vanessa Beecroft also commented, "In my previous work, I have always been conscious of femininity and masculinity, so I have never incorporated a unisex concept. I sometimes work with several women, and at first glance they appear to be similar, uniform beings wearing the same clothes, but upon closer inspection, they are all completely different women. There are similarities with the military as well. I love the purity of Valentino's current designs, which combine techniques inherited from the past with a vision of the present and the future. This is my ultimate dream. It was a challenge for me to work on a relatively casual project in such a short period of time."
Images and videos of the performance will be displayed in the windows of Valentino stores in Milan's Via Montenapoleone, Rome's Piazza di Spagna, London's Old Bond Street, and New York's 5th Avenue from April.
