It's been 14 years since I started living in New York, and I still miss Japanese food. I was born and raised in Japan, so my tongue craves the taste of dashi. However, most Japanese restaurants in New York are high-end. For dinner, it's rare to find a price per person for less than $50 including tax and service charge. Tax is about 9%, and tips are 15-20%, so if the original bill is $100, you'll pay around $130. However, there are some restaurants where you can eat lunch for under $20.

The restaurant I recommend this time is House Of Small Wonder in Brooklyn.





This is a European-based cafe restaurant typical of the East Coast, but the menu is influenced by Japanese food. While it's pure fusion cuisine, it also offers Okinawan-style taco rice and Japanese hamburgers. They also serve sashimi rice bowls, and the place is always crowded with local New Yorkers.





The interior of the restaurant has an organic feel to it, with lots of greenery and a real tree poking through the interior from its roots. This restaurant offers a slightly different atmosphere from the graffiti-filled streets, and is a recommended spot for lunch, serving delicious fusion Japanese cuisine.
