Ten contemporary artists, including Sputniko!, will participate in a reexamination of "the state of art today" at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa

Aug 6, 2015

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, will be hosting "The Contemporary 1: Our Time: Art in a Post-Industrial Society" through August 30th. This exhibition is part of "The Contemporary," a series of exhibitions that reexamine the state of art today, organized to mark the museum's 10th anniversary. This first of three exhibitions focuses on contemporary Japan. The term "post-industrial society" describes Japan's current state, a time when the country has shifted its focus from an industrial society to the service and information industries. It also highlights the growing efforts to build relationships in response to social issues such as a declining birthrate and aging population, and the increasing number of people dying alone. It also showcases the development and evolution of personal media such as social media. The participating artists include Sputniko!, who is deeply interested in the changing nature of humanity and society brought about by technology, and who presents a new image of humanity through her style of expressing social issues through light-hearted pop music. In addition, artists such as Teppei Kaneuji, Ari Okubo, Naohiro Ukawa, Taketo Koganezawa, Taro Izumi, Natsunosuke Mise, Tabaimo, and Ryota Yagi will be showcasing three-dimensional works that express the constant, fluid transformation of solid objects. Artworks using the ALMA telescope, the largest high-performance radio telescope in history, jointly operated by 21 countries including Japan, will also be on display.
