Louis Vuitton launches "LOUIS 200" project to celebrate the 200th anniversary of founder Louis' birth

Aug 3, 2021
At the heart of the Maison has always been the person of Louis Vuitton. Born on August 4, 1821, Louis Vuitton celebrates this milestone 200th anniversary globally through a series of creative initiatives highlighting his visionary legacy that continues to thrive within the Maison.

"LOUIS 200" tells the story of the adventurer, entrepreneur, designer, and innovator, and his legacy, expressed through a variety of media and collaborations with creators from around the world. From a video game incorporating NFTs (non-fungible tokens), to a store window display project in which the iconic trunk is reinterpreted as a container by 200 talented creators, to a large-scale triptych of Louis by Alex Katz, to a fictional novel about Louis' life and intentions by French author Caroline Bongrand (to be published in French and English by Gallimard in October), to the first-ever documentary retrospective, "LOOKING FOR LOUIS," (available on APPLE TV in December), highlighting the life of a young pioneer who left a lasting legacy from a humble beginning—"LOUIS 200" is more than just a tribute. Its collective journey of Louis's life is a source of endless inspiration.

"LOUIS "200" retraces Louis's almost mythical origins. Whether by fate or sheer determination, at age 14, Louis set out from his hometown of Anchay, a mountain village in France's Jura region. After two years of walking, he arrived in Paris and began his apprenticeship with Romain Maréchal, a renowned crate maker and packer. In 1854, Louis opened his own maison at 4, rue Neuve des Capucines, near Paris's Place Vendôme, home to the city's most prestigious fashion houses. His friendship with couturier Charles-Frédéric Worth and his commission to make and pack trunks for Empress Eugénie further enhanced his fame. Sensing the growing importance of trunks as transportation methods improved, Louis used his ingenuity and skill to develop waterproof canvas and restructure the trunk's structure by flattening the lid, gradually improving its functionality. "LOUIS 200" bridges the gap between Louis Vuitton, the pioneering crate maker and packing craftsman, and today's visionary creators who continue to push the boundaries of their life's work. This initiative, without any associated product launches, is a pure expression of the Maison's creativity, inspiration, and history. Rather than adopting the typical exhibition format, the program offers a playful and diverse mix of formats, inviting visitors on a journey exploring the Maison's history in a contemporary context. "LOUIS THE GAME" will be available for download from the App Store and Google Play on August 4th. Additionally, "200 LOUIS," a window display project being developed in Louis Vuitton stores worldwide, will see 200 talented creators from across backgrounds and disciplines interpret Louis, a name synonymous with unparalleled quality and savoir-faire, in their own unique way. Following these opening projects, as well as the novel and documentary, a range of other programming will run until the end of 2021.
