The Setouchi Triennale is coming to Shinjuku Isetan! Talk events with Shinro Ohtake and others, and local special merchandise for sale!

Oct 22, 2016

From October 26th to November 1st, the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building's Center Park/TOKYO Kaihoku will host a collaborative exhibition between the Setouchi Triennale and Mitsukoshi Isetan. The exhibition will evoke the atmosphere of the Setouchi Triennale, a contemporary art festival held on the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, through spatial decorations, talk events, and special merchandise available only on-site. Held every three years, the Setouchi Triennale is an international contemporary art festival founded with the aim of preserving and promoting the unique Setouchi culture nurtured by the beautiful sea and islands. Spread across 14 islands in the Seto Inland Sea, the 108-day event offers visitors the chance to enjoy seasonal scenery, artists' works, cuisine, and traditional performing arts. This time, the exhibition will be held at TOKYO Kaihoku, welcoming General Director Fram Kitagawa as the visiting Setouchi Triennale. In the TOKYO Kaihoku Zone, artist Takuya Yamashita has installed spatial decorations based on the mascot character of a certain soccer team, creating an atmosphere that makes you feel as if you are at the Setouchi Triennale venue. Additionally, at a talk event on the 26th, art director Fram Kitagawa and bonsai artist Narushi Hirao will discuss "The Restoration of the Ocean and My Thoughts on the Setouchi Triennale," and "What I Want to Communicate Through Bonsai at the Setouchi Triennale." On the 27th, Fram Kitagawa and artist Shinro Ohtake will hold a talk session about the allure of the ocean, and Ohtake will discuss the theme of "Benesse Art Site and the Works Created at the Setouchi Triennale." On the 31st, picture book author and artist Seizo Tajima and singer/voice artist Shizuru Ohtaka will discuss "My Thoughts on the Works on Oshima" and "What I Want to Communicate Through the Setouchi Triennale Event." Reservations for the talk events will be accepted in-store from the 22nd.

At the venue, in addition to T-shirts designed by Ohtake Shinro and original goods from the Chichu Art Museum in Naoshima, there will also be special sales of the Setouchi Triennale official guidebook (1,400 yen including tax / sold by Gendai Kikakushitsu) and badges (14 types in total / 300 yen each). We hope you will come and experience the words and works of artists who love Setouchi Triennale and feel the power of the rich nature and art.
