Gucci celebrates its 100th anniversary with the launch of the "Gucci Bamboo House" experiential exhibition in Kyoto

Event Date:2021.07.22-08.15
Jul 14, 2021
To celebrate the brand's 100th anniversary, Gucci will host an experiential exhibition, "Gucci Bamboo House," in Kyoto, the sister city of Florence, Italy, from July 22 to August 15, 2021 (advance reservations required). The exhibition will explore the heritage and revitalization of bamboo, the material used in Gucci's iconic handbags.

The exhibition will be held in the Former Kawasaki Family Residence, built in the 1920s, the year Gucci was founded, and designated a tangible cultural property by Kyoto City. This space, where traditional Kyoto townhouse architecture, complete with a tea room and a small garden, coexists with European architectural styles and design, offers a diverse range of experiences. The theme running through the exhibition is bamboo. Bamboo is the material used in Gucci's iconic handbags, and its knotty, swaying upwards, evokes thoughts about Gucci's 100th anniversary. In a room facing the bamboo grove garden, an installation showcases precious archive pieces, emblematic of Gucci's craftsmanship, including bamboo-handled bags. The tea room, designed by a master craftsman of the sukiya style, has been reborn as a space blending the traditions of Japanese tea ceremony with Gucci's aesthetic, newly named "Chikubushian." Other amenities include a library with specially curated books, a cinema room screening a short film about Gucci's "Aria" collection, and a salon featuring the latest style, the Gucci Diana, a contemporary reinterpretation of Gucci's bamboo-handled tote bag, introduced in the 1990s.

This exhibition will breathe new life into the Former Kawasaki Family Residence, shining a spotlight on the outstanding craftsmanship and rich creativity passed down in Florence and Kyoto. This is in line with the spirit of "regeneration" presented by Gucci Creative Director Alessandro Michele in the special movie for the latest collection, "Aria."
