Dec 27, 2012
Teikoku Databank, using its corporate profile database "COSMOS2," has designated "anniversary companies" as companies celebrating milestone years in 2013. The survey compiled a list of companies celebrating their milestone years, from 10 years to 200 years, in 10-year increments. The results indicate that 135,275 companies nationwide will be celebrating their anniversaries next year, including 297 publicly listed companies. Retail (373 companies) accounted for the largest number of centennials (1,425 companies). Retail, manufacturing, and wholesale industries accounted for an increasing proportion of these companies as the years passed. Other notable centennial companies include Iwanami Shoten, House Foods, Sumitomo Chemical, and Tombow Pencil Co., Ltd. Incidentally, 1913 was the second year of the Taisho era (1913), when Morinaga Caramel was launched and Roland Garros achieved the world's first successful flight across the Mediterranean Sea. In fashion, the transition from Paul Poiret to Chanel in Paris was a time when signs of the transition to the ready-made era were beginning to emerge.

Looking at the breakdown by decade, the most common number was 40 years old, with 28,892 companies, followed by 10 years old (22,592 companies). The service industry had the most 10-year anniversaries, and this year marks the 10th anniversary of Sojitz, a joint holding company between Nichimen and Nissho Iwai. Sojitz is a general trading company that has been a business partner of Nike since its inception and handles companies such as Eastpak.
