■ "Hatching Diary" by Aoyagi Natsumi

Artist Natsumi Aoyagi's artist book "Hatching Diary" is a project that has developed into a printed version of a video series that documents Aoyagi's journey through various green spaces in search of butterfly larvae. As you leaf through the book, looking at the images on the pages and reading Aoyagi's diary-like writings on the edges, a world different from the video unfolds through your visual and verbal perceptions. Born in 1990, Aoyagi has a history of posting his drawings and cartoons on drawing message boards since elementary school. He comes from a generation that grew up in an era when drawing wasn't always limited to paper and pen. Perhaps this fact further broadened his understanding of media. As if to embody the ability of drawing to transcend the boundaries of any medium, Aoyagi combines multiple media—video, still images, drawings, diary-like text written by the artist, and even a voice reciting it—to create a single work. With the development of easily portable recording media like smartphones and cameras and the rise of social media, capturing the scenery and events before our eyes has become a more familiar means of capturing images and sharing them with an unspecified number of people. This book, born from a flexible approach across multiple media, embodies the ingenuity of the book's binding and design, creating a unique presence that can only be achieved through the artist's planning and production.
