The ancient capital of Ayutthaya (Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya), one of Thailand's major tourist destinations and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991, will be added to the 2022 edition of the Michelin Guide Thailand, scheduled to be published at the end of 2021.

Ayutthaya will be added as the fifth city in the Michelin Guide Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Chiang Mai, Phuket & Bangr 2022, which will highlight Ayutthaya as an excellent gastronomy tourism destination for all ages, with a perfect blend of old and new charm and local attractions to suit a variety of interests.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, says Ayutthaya is one of the shining jewels of Thailand's culinary heritage and gastronomy. Once a diplomatic and commercial center, this fascinating historic city has absorbed a wide variety of foreign influences, including Portuguese, Japanese, Indian, and Persian influences, giving rise to Thai cuisine. Thailand's strategic location, surrounded by three rivers, also provides an abundance of freshwater fish, river shrimp, fresh vegetables, and fruit.

Mr. Prenec said, "We are pleased to feature Ayutthaya in the new edition of the Michelin Guide Thailand. The city's culinary scene is a wonderful fusion of old and new, with a diverse selection including long-established restaurants, new establishments in renovated old buildings and modern buildings, trendy coffee shops and cafes, and even markets on land and over the water. The city's rich historical and cultural background offers a wide range of culinary possibilities, creating a unique experience that attracts both domestic and international tourists and keeps them coming back for more."

The multicultural blend of foreign settlers from Ayutthaya's days as the capital of Thailand (then Siam) has had a significant impact on Thai cuisine to this day. Representative examples include Massaman curry, a popular Thai dish made with coconut milk and curry spices influenced by India and Persia, and the Portuguese-influenced desserts Thong Yip (meaning golden egg yolk flower tart) and Thong Yot (meaning golden egg yolk drop), made with eggs and egg yolks.

Located near the capital Bangkok, Ayutthaya is one of Thailand's top tourist destinations, easily accessible by public transportation such as trains and ferries. There's an endless supply of attractions and activities to enjoy, including historical temples, foreign settlements from Japan, Portugal, and the Netherlands, specialty museums like the Million Toy Museum, home to Krirk Yoonpun's private collection, and the Thai Boat Museum, as well as riverboat tours.

Yuthasak Supasorn, General Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, commented, "Alongside touring the historical and cultural sites, enjoying the diverse cuisine at the local markets and restaurants has become established as one of the most memorable experiences for both domestic and international tourists who visit Ayutthaya. I am confident that the next edition of the Michelin Guide will once again captivate Thai and international readers alike with the grandeur of Ayutthaya and its boundless appeal."
