In November 2012, Vivienne Westwood and her husband, Andreas Kronthaler, visited the Amazon rainforest with Cool Earth, an environmental organization that supports the conservation of endangered forests.
The journey began after Vivienne donated £1 million to Cool Earth. The couple spent a week in the Ashanica village, living in the primeval forest, via small plane and boat from Lima, Peru. They stayed in tents, washed their clothes in the river, ate local produce, and occasionally received shamanic healing treatments, immersing themselves in the local culture. Throughout the journey, Vivienne maintained her own individuality, wearing clothes she designed herself.
Cool Earth supports the community in sustainable ways, such as growing cacao for chocolate production and creating hair ornaments and jewelry using local products, without cutting down trees. Vivienne was presented with a hair ornament made from cotton grown in the rainforest and seeds collected from the forest.
She also visited Peru's Vice Minister of the Environment and requested further support and cooperation in protecting the rainforest region. The Vice Minister responded, "Please become an ambassador for the rainforest." Vivienne, Cool Earth's largest fundraiser, has contributed to forest conservation by raising donations for Kate Moss and Storm Modeling Agency, among others.
