Fashion designer Ralph Lauren is known as one of the world's leading car collectors. In 2011, he exhibited a selection of his most famous cars at the Louvre in Paris for the "The Art of Automobile" exhibition. He has now unveiled a new watch collection that expresses the details of his beloved automobiles through watch designs.
The "Ralph Lauren Automotive Collection" is inspired by a 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic Coupe, one of Lauren's personal collections. The design incorporates not only the image but also the texture felt by the driver, using oak and Indian rosewood reminiscent of Bugatti steering wheels and dashboards.
A reception was held at Ralph Lauren Omotesando on October 21st, featuring a talk show with actress Reiko Takashima and motor journalist Tatsuya Kushima. A Bugatti was on display in front of the Ralph Lauren Omotesando store, where the event was held, and Hishima admitted to taking a photo before entering the venue. Inside the venue, a collection of 1/8-sized miniature cars owned by Ralph Lauren was on display. Takashima, a car enthusiast and licensed racer, commented, "When a man starts talking about cars or watches, his eyes light up, don't they?" She smiled and pointed out this unique trait of men that sets him apart from women. Regarding the Ralph Lauren Automotive Collection's incorporation of steering wheel and other design elements into its watches, Hishima excitedly commented, "I'm truly amazed. I've seen other watchmakers create lettering inspired by 1950s and 1960s car gauges, but I think anyone would be blown away by this. Maybe it's because they actually own cars that they can come up with such ultra-high-level ideas." When Kushima commented, "There's a connection between car and watch enthusiasts," Takashima strongly agreed. "I agree! Ever since I was a child, I've always wanted to have nice cars and watches rather than just a lot of money. 'I'll have nice things and become a good person worthy of them,'" she said, expressing her passionate feelings about how she has always cherished cars and watches as her personal growth goals.
This model is currently on sale at Ralph Lauren Omotesando.
