Contemporary photography exhibition from the Deutsche Bank Collection featuring works by Gursky, Richter, and others currently on view at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art

Oct 29, 2015

The photography exhibition "Time Is There: Contemporary Photography from the Deutsche Bank Collection" is running at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Shinagawa, Tokyo, from September 12 to January 11, 2016. The exhibition features 60 masterpieces by approximately 40 artists from Asia, Africa, America, and Europe, spanning the 1970s to the present day, selected from the approximately 60,000 pieces in Deutsche Bank's contemporary art collection, known as the bank's most comprehensive collection of prints. The lineup of artists includes internationally renowned German artists such as Bernd and Hilla Becher, Andreas Gursky, and Gerhard Richter, as well as Asian artists who have recently attracted attention, such as Cao Fei, Zhong Yongdu, and Liu Zheng, and Japanese artists such as Hiroshi Sugimoto, Tokihiro Sato, and Miwa Yanagi. By viewing the photographs in which these artists have captured time and capturing it as images, and by sensing the time inherent in each artist's expression, the exhibition offers an opportunity to reflect on time and reaffirm the appeal of photography as an artistic medium. The exhibition, titled "Time Present—Photography from the Deutsche Bank Collection," will travel internationally, beginning at the Singapore Art Museum in the fall of 2014 and continuing to museums around Asia. This marks the second collaboration between the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art and Deutsche Bank since "Cherry Blossoms Falling: A Tour of the Deutsche Bank Collection with Zaha Hadid," which was held in 2006 with a venue designed by architect Zaha Hadid. Additionally, a related event will be held on October 31st from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM, featuring artist Tokihiro Sato, titled "What is a Camera? Taking Photos with a Cardboard Box and a Magnifying Glass." The workshop is limited to 15 groups, and participation costs only include museum admission. (As of October 27th, there is a waiting list for reservations.) A lecture series by curator and critic Stephen Sarrazin will also be held. The second lecture, "The Relationship between Photography and Media Art," will be held on November 21st, focusing on artist Shelley Silver, and the third lecture, "A Conversation with Film Director Travis Klose," featuring Travis Klose, director of the documentary "Arakimentari," which follows photographer Yoshitsune Araki, will be held on December 5th. The first lecture, "How Photography Became Contemporary Art," by Stephen Sarrazin, originally scheduled for October 17th, has been postponed to January 9th from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM due to the lecturer's sudden illness.
