Yayoi Kusama x UNIQLO at MoMA Collaboration Tote Bag Now Available in Two Colors

Jul 13, 2015

UNIQLO and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) are collaborating to offer clothing and other items featuring works by world-renowned artists. Recently, the MoMA Special Edition Collection features the release of the "SPRZ NY Tote Bag" (two designs, 1,990 yen each), a tote bag designed by artist Yayoi Kusama. Yayoi Kusama represented Japan at the Venice Biennale in 1993, presented a collaborative collection with Louis Vuitton in 2012, and has continued to explore a wide range of creative endeavors, from drawing, painting, and photography to installations and performance art. As a child, she would dream and have visions of a world covered in polka dots, making her eccentricity seem almost inevitable. Influenced by her childhood, her creative practice has featured recurring elements of polka dots, mesh, squiggly lines, and stickers throughout her 60-year career, playfully challenging traditional concepts of composition.

The collaborative bag comes in two colors: red and yellow. The red features irregularly arranged polka dots all over the bag, while the yellow features continuous polka dots and numerous undulating lines, demonstrating Yayoi Kusama's unique worldview. Functionally, the bag features an open pocket on the inside that can be opened with a button.

The name of the bag, "SPRZ NY," is the name of a UNIQLO project. A portmanteau of "SURPRISE NY," this project, based on the concept of "where clothing and art meet," spearheaded by New York, aims to present art that will surprise and shock the world and create innovative product designs.
