Advanced skin makeup for different travel occasions: "Glossy and healthy" or "Natural and clean" [FH BEAUTY STRATEGY vol.1 5/5]

Jul 14, 2015

Trends are reflected in base makeup. For the past few years, there's one word we keep hearing in collections, in the media, or whenever new items are released: "translucent." We also hear words like "light," "healthy," and "natural."

In other words, applying so much makeup that it's obvious you're wearing makeup is a no-no; what's required is a light look. Of course, doing nothing at all is a big no-no. How can you achieve clear, clean, healthy beauty on vacation? The key lies in choosing the right foundation color and the importance of skincare as a preparatory step.

"First, spread the primer all over your face. After that, you'll apply foundation, but with this makeup look, I recommend consciously choosing a shade that's slightly darker than usual. This is to avoid making your skin look too white. Foundations purchased in winter or early spring are inevitably chosen when your skin is lighter than it is in summer, so they tend to look washed out during this season. Also, considering that you're on vacation, it's worth taking another look at whether the foundation you're using is okay. The color should be based on the skin tone of your neck. Apply foundation along the lines of your face, and then lightly on your cheekbones, spreading it thinly. On top of that, lightly apply your usual foundation color to your T-zone and pat it all over your face with a sponge or similar. The key is not to apply too much. Then, it's important to apply finishing powder thoroughly, even around the nostrils. When applying powder, be sure to press the frame of your face firmly to reduce shine, while still leaving a moderate glow." (Makeup artist Teramoto Akito)

I aim for a base makeup that is natural and light, like bare skin, rather than one that feels stuck on like a mask. Moisturizing as a preparation is very important. Before starting your base makeup, hydrate your skin with a moisturizing lotion or cream. This will allow for a light base makeup. Once you've completed this, which is arguably the most important, preparation, it's time to apply a makeup primer. I use La Mer's The Repellent "I chose the Skin Tint because it protects my skin from dryness and UV rays while evening out my skin tone, allowing me to apply a lighter amount of foundation. Depending on my skin problems, I may want to add a control color to my routine. Choose a pink shade to cover a lack of color, or a lavender shade if I'm concerned about dullness. I apply a thin layer of liquid foundation next, covering any areas of concern. All that's left is to lightly apply powder foundation on top. Applying it with a brush will ensure a thin, even application. If the powder ends up powdery, try patting it with a lightly damp sponge. This little step will make the finish much more beautiful," says makeup artist Teramoto Akito.
