BIRKENSTOCK's special order model ZURICH, created to commemorate IENA's 30th anniversary, will be released on May 13th. The design features an adapted footbed from the ZURICH model, which is popular in Japan and is featured in the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, and will be available in unisex sizes from both the IENA and EDIFICE brands.

ZURICH is an envelope-type model that covers the instep, released in 1967. Its distinctive design features two fasteners on the upper, allowing the size to be adjusted to fit the instep, resulting in a perfect fit. The sole is equipped with a footbed developed exclusively by BIRKENSTOCK, whose cork and jute materials and anatomical shape guide the foot in the correct position and ensure a comfortable fit. The natural suede used for the upper is a light beige color, Taupe, which is highly popular with BIRKENSTOCK.

Not only does it give the feel of the suede, but it also gives an elegant and light impression. For this special edition model, the footbed has been changed to a black microfiber material, creating a contrast between beige and black, resulting in a sophisticated and chic style that is characteristic of the IENA/EDIFICE brand.


For IENA's 30th anniversary, we wanted to collaborate with timeless, beloved items that can be worn across the ages, and this led to our collaboration with BIRKENSTOCK. Furthermore, with more people working from home, lifestyles around the world are changing, with people re-evaluating the importance of long-lasting favorite items. We want to understand these customer needs and provide new value.

To ensure that ZURICH, which is popular with both IENA and EDIFICE users, can be worn for a long time, we have changed the footbed to black. Furthermore, as black is a color that IENA will be focusing on for the launch of Autumn/Winter 2021, we have chosen black as the color and material for this season's items, taking into consideration both trendiness and practicality.

BIRKENSTOCK shoes and sandals feature a custom-designed footbed. Its contoured, anatomical shape is designed to promote a natural gait. The footbed is made from carefully selected, high-quality natural cork, natural latex, jute, and suede. Cork is a renewable raw material obtained from the bark of the cork oak tree, offering high elasticity, excellent cushioning, and thermal and acoustic insulation. The bark is gently peeled from the tree without damaging it or the surrounding environment. This harvesting is traditionally done by hand. Cork oak trees are ready for harvesting when they are around 25 years old, and the bark is harvested every nine years for a period of approximately 150 years.
