Anrealage's Kunihiko Morinaga and Yumi Matsutoya hold talk event at Shinjuku Isetan

On March 28th, ANREALAGE's pop-up shop "FLOWER SHOP" in the TOKYO Kaihoku (Liberation Zone) on the second floor of the Isetan Shinjuku Main Building hosted a talk event featuring singer-songwriter Yumi Matsutoya as a special guest. The event featured a discussion with the brand's designer, Kunihiko Morinaga, on fashion and music. Morinaga explained the background to the event, saying, "The concept of FLOWER SHOP is 'invisible flowers.' The image is of flowers that become visible for the first time when light is shone on them, or that they bloom. Matsutoya was the first person who came to mind when I asked her to appear at the event, even though I felt it was an honor. She agreed." When the MC announced, "Now, let's introduce our special secret guest, Yumi Matsutoya," the melody of "Haru yo, Koi" (Come Spring) played, erupting the audience, and Matsutoya was greeted with thunderous applause. Matsutoya's outfit for the day consisted of a gold-based Japanese-style sukajan jacket (sukajan jacket) with tigers and pink floral patterns embroidered on the chest, sleeves, and back, which he had purchased in Paris, and a shirt with a spring-like floral pattern in vermilion, light crimson, and yellow underneath. Matsutoya smiled and said, "We hadn't discussed (today's styling) at all, but today, Morinaga and I (who also wears sukajan jackets) were wearing matching sukajan jackets. Maybe our tastes are similar (laughs)." Meanwhile, Morinaga explained, "(Pointing to the black embroidered sukajan jacket he was wearing), this is from my own brand, and I created it with reflection as its theme. The normal design is reversed, so it reflects light when it hits it." When asked by Matsutoya about his fashion philosophy, Morinaga replied, "When I make clothes, I set a concept and create clothes that are born from that concept. Of course, I pursue the beauty of the shape (of the clothes), but I also value the concept itself, whether it's invisible, something that has never been seen before, and whether the end result is interesting. For example, with this season's theme of 'Reflect,' I apply that to everything, such as 'Let's try to reflect the shape and material,' or 'Let's try to reflect the way we present it,' and complete the shape, material, and color." Matsutoya added, "I agree. I think that in order to make (a song) sustainable, it's only when you have a clear direction for yourself that it can be completed as something sensuous." Morinaga also explained about creating clothes, "If I were to create clothes now based on a theme from six months ago, I think it would end up being something completely different. There are moments when I really feel drawn to them, and as time passes, the way I approach my work changes." Matsutoya also commented, "I think the relationship with time also applies to music. Creating a song is like designing time, so as time passes, the same song can sound different, link to memories, and take on different meanings."

Regarding the relationship between fashion and music, Morinaga said, "I think clothes are not like songs that you repeat in your head, but are ambiguous. I think an image is formed each time you see a piece of clothing." Meanwhile, Matsutoya said, "I think fashion also has a 'story.' It could be a memory of the situation you wore the clothes in, or someone you met while wearing them. Even if it's not depicted in the lyrics, there are various drawings layered in the background, and I think if it's imbued with soul, it will reach the listener."

Although this talk event was not announced in advance by Isetan, more than 100 guests gathered at the venue, and the audience listened intently to the worldviews of both the surprise superstar and the popular designer.
