The Met Ball, the opening party for the Costume Institute exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, had a theme of "Charles James Beyond Fashion." Guests wore couture-inspired dresses as a homage to Charles James, the first American couturier active in the early 20th century. The makeup artists responsible for the gorgeous dresses were NARS. Sarah Jessica Parker's makeup was by Leslie Lopez, who created 1950s-inspired eye makeup to match her 1950s-inspired Oscar de la Renta dress. Blake Lively's makeup was by Elaine Offers. A muted red lip gave the look a modern touch, evoking a classic yet glamorous Old Hollywood vibe.
Jenny Smith, who worked with Karen Elson, chose a reddish-orange lip color and, for a touch of definition, used a flick of eyeliner, a technique favored by women in the 1950s.
Jessica Pare, who wore a glamorous dress, was styled by My Quinn. For a bold yet not too dated look, she chose a bright pink lip color. To keep the look fresh, she opted for metallic shades instead.
Kirsten Dunst's dress was inspired by the films Star Wars. Janine Lovell created intergalactic-inspired makeup to match. Meanwhile, Benjamin Buckey worked on Solange Knowles, who appeared in a vibrant salmon pink dress. I imagined a dark smoky bronze look, combining eye makeup with plenty of mascara, shimmering blush, and nude-colored lips.
