Armani himself oversees the project! Armani/Casa super-renovates a 200-year-old London landmark

Mar 16, 2021
Since its launch in 2004, Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio has continued to develop fascinating interior design projects around the world. Designer Giorgio Armani personally oversees all projects. The studio's latest project is being featured in Modern Living magazine for the first time in Japan.

Built approximately 200 years ago, this seven-story townhouse in London's Nicebridge boasts a Victorian-style architecture, boasting a total floor area of 860 square meters. This magnificent building is a private residence. Armani/Casa Interior Design Studio has transformed the entire building, with all 26 rooms, into a modern space suited to modern lifestyles.

This space, which retains the charm of a bygone era while prioritizing the comfort of its residents, is being featured in Modern Living magazine for the first time in Japan.

The breakfast room on the first floor has been redesigned to allow the best possible natural light to flood the space, like a sunroom, with light constantly filtering through the multi-layered glass ceiling and an internal and external shading system. The checkerboard marble flooring gives the space a modern impression.

The decorations adorning the walls, ceiling and furniture in the second-floor living room have been restored based on the original drawings from the time of construction in accordance with the ordinance for the preservation of cultural decorations, which is part of the Important Traditional Buildings design. While making use of traditional elements such as the window frames and ceiling decorations, the space follows the "Armani worldview" characterized by linear design, and has a soft impression with a base of gray and beige.

The library corner on the first floor uses wallpaper with an original Armani/Casa design, which creates a wonderful harmony with the traditional ceiling design and beautifully highlights the custom-made furniture created for this renovation.

The spa area on the basement floor is decorated in a green space, and the walls are printed with a bamboo forest, an iconic motif of Armani/Casa, creating a sense of freedom and a fusion with nature, making it seem as if you are outdoors, even while indoors, creating a stylish yet relaxing space.

In light of the current situation in which the world was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic after the villa was completed, designer Giorgio Armani spoke of his universal ethics through this project, saying, "We are facing a time when we have never felt the importance of the environment as keenly as we have in our lifetimes. In interior design, I believe it is important to find ways to adapt to any space, rethink ideas to suit new lifestyles, and move forward sustainably." (Quoted from an interview in Modern Living)

Issue 255 of Modern Living, currently on sale, features a 6-page article detailing the renovation of this building and sharing the thoughts of designer Giorgio Armani. Be sure to check it out.
