Zaha Hadid-designed Stuart Weitzman new store opens in Milan

Sep 25, 2013

A new Stuart Weitzman concept store designed by architect Zaha Hadid opened in Milan on the 19th.
The store is located in the world-famous shopping district of Via Sant'Andrea. Its geometric, multi-layered design is based on ergonomic principles. Modular displays double as shoe showcases and seating. The curved seats and freestanding displays are crafted from rose gold fiberglass, a technique used in boat building. The stone walls and ceiling are made of GRC (glass-reinforced fiber cement), creating a strong yet delicate curve.
This flagship store is also Stuart Weitzman's 100th store. Zaha Hadid plans to open more concept stores next year and beyond, with Hong Kong, Rome, and New York among the potential locations. Celebrities such as Kate Moss and Olivia Palermo, who serve as the brand's spokespersons, attended the opening event held on the 19th. A social film starring Kate, which was released on the day, can also be viewed on the official website. Zaha Hadid is a female architect of Iraqi origin. She has designed London's Aquatics Centre, built for the 2010 Olympics, the National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome (MAXXI), and China's Guangzhou Opera House. To date, her only work in Japan is the Neil Barrett Aoyama store, but the new National Stadium for the Tokyo Olympics will be completed in 2019.
