Etro launches two new fragrances, scents of good fortune inspired by myth and tradition

Nov 30, 2015

ETRO released two new fragrances on November 20th. "Marquetry Eau de Parfum" (100ml, 19,000 yen) was inspired by marquetry, a delicate technique that combines tiny pieces of ivory and minerals, mother-of-pearl fragments, and flakes of precious metals. It's a traditional technique used on jewelry boxes and other accessories. The fragrance opens with notes of bergamot, lavender, and peach. The heart notes are a sensual blend of rich rose and Peruvian balsam accented with the scent of cocoa, said to bring good fortune. The base notes evoke the unique inlays adorned with precious stones carefully polished by artisans in Mongolian palaces. A soothing duet of labdanum and amber gently elevates the scent, while a sweet musk gently blends with a vanilla highlight. "Io Myself Eau de Parfum" (100ml, ¥19,000) is a dramatic fragrance that intertwines mythology and the melodies of essential oils. It was inspired by the Roman poet Ovid's masterpiece, "Metamorphoses," the myth of the priestess Io, who was loved by the all-powerful god Zeus and became a priest. In the story, Zeus attracts her by filling his golden cloak with dewdrops and rainbows. The top notes bring new life to the fragrance with pure papyrus, lemon, bergamot, and mandarin. The key heart note, saffron, a Middle Eastern spice, blends with cedar, evoking beautiful sunsets and cold Tatar nights spent in a yurt. Finally, amber and musk create a wild nuance, evoking the warmth of rare creatures that inhabit the earth. The bottles feature the brand's iconic paisley motif, in gold for "Mercatorie Eau de Parfum" and silver for "IO Myself Eau de Parfum."
