Exploring the origins of modern visual design culture: "20th Century Posters: Landscapes of Images and Text" exhibition held at Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum

Event Date:2021.01.30-04.11
Jan 6, 2021
In early spring 2021, the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum will host the exhibition "20th Century Posters [Landscapes of Images and Text] - Is Visual Communication Possible?". This exhibition, organized in collaboration with Tama Art University, brings together a carefully selected collection of Constructivist posters from Takeo Co., Ltd.'s poster collection. From early spring through cherry blossom season, visitors can enjoy the museum's seasonal garden scenery.

●Exhibition Overview
"Constructivism," which emerged in Europe in the 1910s and 1920s and brought innovation to art and design, brought about a distinctive style of expression, particularly in the field of visual design, that sought to combine images and text in a geometric and abstract way. Shared throughout the ages by numerous artists and designers, including El Lissitzky, Jan Tschichold, Max Bill, and Josef Müller-Brockmann, this style has continued to evolve as an attempt to broaden the possibilities of visual design, forming the foundation of visual design today. This exhibition traces the landscape of images and text that was woven throughout the 20th century by the "constructive posters" that emerged from this trend and colored the era, through the Takeo Poster Collection (on loan from Tama Art University). Please enjoy the vivid creativity displayed by each individual poster on display, as well as the historical process of inheritance and development that these posters as a whole show.
