A self-edited record of the activities of members of the Photo Secession movement who question "What is photography?" [NADiff Recommended Book]

Mar 23, 2017

Our Thursday series features must-read books from each branch of the art bookshop NADiff. This week's book is "Photo Secession II: The Unethicality of Photography." It's introduced by the NADiff A/P/A/R/T 1F, 1-18-4 Ebisu, Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, the flagship store in Ebisu, Tokyo.

■ "Photo Secession II: The Unethicality of Photography"

Founded in 2010 by photographers Risaku Suzuki, Ryudai Takano, and Yasuharu Matsue, and critics Shinobu Kuraishi and Minoru Shimizu, the Photo Secession is a group that has been working to explore the possibilities of photography as a medium from both the perspective of practice and criticism, a time of transition.

Their manifesto states, "What is photography? What are the possibilities of photography? We wish to reexamine these questions." Since their inaugural exhibition in 2010, their work has attracted significant attention from both those involved with photography and young art fans alike. This book is a collection of works summarizing the group's activities from 2012 to 2016. Planned and edited by members of the Photo Secession group, it includes not only exhibition records and transcripts of talk events, but also compelling interviews with three photographers from different generations—Suda Issei, Sugimoto Hiroshi, and Araki Nobuyoshi—who were all born in 1963. The all-white cover, completely unprinted, is a refreshing addition. A special edition, limited to 50 copies, includes an original print each by members Takano Ryudai and Matsue Taiji. The glossy purple cover is made of photographic paper, offering a delightful design inspired by photography. This book offers an opportunity to reconsider the profound influence of photography as a medium in our lives today.

Currently, an exhibition to coincide with the publication of this book, "Photo Secession II: Unethical Photography - Distance and Perspective" (February 9th - March 26th, 2017), is being held at the NADiff Gallery inside the NADiff A/P/A/R/T store. There is only a short time left for the exhibition, but we hope you will come and see it along with the book.
