An exhibition showcasing "Thaw" will run from November 13th to February 7th, 2021. This exhibition is part of the Fondation Louis Vuitton's "Hors-les-murs" (Beyond Walls) program, which brings previously unseen works from the collection to Espace Louis Vuitton in Tokyo, Munich, Venice, Beijing, and Seoul, with the aim of providing a wider audience with the opportunity to experience the collection through international projects.
Doug Aiken's work ranges from photography, sculpture, and architectural interventions to film, sound, single- and multi-channel video works, and installations. Aiken's paradoxically abstract art, centered on the human figure and landscape, takes on an almost physical, sensory quality that transcends the boundaries of simple visual perception. The immersive projection "New Ocean: thaw" offers a new perspective on Alaska's poetic vastness, exploring the romantic sentiment toward natural immensity captured in 19th-century panoramas, but in the context of contemporary issues such as climate change, catastrophes, and melting glaciers. This spectacular work, exhibited as part of the "Hors-les-murs" (Beyond the Walls) program showcasing works from the Fondation Louis Vuitton collection, has been reconstructed by the artist specifically for Espace Louis Vuitton Tokyo.
