A fusion of Arita ware and the Netherlands. Saga aims to become a design prefecture.

Nov 6, 2013

On November 1, Saga Prefecture signed a partnership agreement with the Embassy of the Netherlands to promote the development of Arita ware, a local industry celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2016. The agreement aims to introduce the modern and functional Dutch "Dutch Design" to Arita ware and collaborate on manufacturing, with the aim of "establishing the Saga brand." Governor Yasushi Furukawa, who attended the signing ceremony, stated, "The 17th century was truly a golden age, when Arita ware was exported to many European countries. Through this agreement, we hope to revive this golden age in the 21st century." Ambassador to Japan Radink van Vollenhoven also commented, "Dutch Design is always challenging itself with new and exciting designs. I look forward to seeing this integration with Arita's traditional pottery industry." Going forward, designers from around the world, primarily from the Netherlands, and Arita ware producers will collaborate to create Arita ware for overseas expansion. They will also create residential workshops and exchange spaces for foreigners interested in Arita ware, with the aim of making it a mecca for creators from all over the world.

In 2011, with the aim of revitalizing the Arita ware production area, they appointed Teruhiro Yanagihara as creative director and developed "1616/arita japan." This has led to the creation of new designs that suit diverse eating habits while preserving the traditions of Arita ware. In particular, the "Color Porcelain" series created by Dutch designers Scholten & Baijings has received high praise around the world.
