For 14 days from October 28th to November 10th, Toshio Shimizu's atelier gallery, C'est le Poème, will be holding an exhibition called "Autumn in Paris: Enjoying Tea with French Antiques through the Eyes of Toshio Shimizu x Murase Jihei's Lacquerware" on the 5th floor of the main building of Isetan Shinjuku. Combining Art Deco silver pots and cutlery with the lacquerware of Murase Jihei III, the exhibition will create a teatime experience that brings antiques and contemporary art into everyday life.

Toshio Shimizu, president of TOSHIO SHIMIZU ART OFFICE, a comprehensive public art consulting company that creates opportunities for people to encounter art in urban locations such as offices, schools, stations and commercial facilities, opened his atelier gallery C'est le Poème in Hayama in 2020 (please check the website for opening hours). We have begun producing art in not only public but also private spaces.

The store name,
C'est le Poème, which means "That is poetry" in French, was inspired by Natsume Soseki's "Kusa Makura," which begins with "As I climbed the mountain path, I thought this." While lamenting that "the human world is difficult to live in," Soseki believed that "poetry, or art, will save us." Now, as the coronavirus pandemic has led people to spend more time at home, experiencing authentic art and crafts even in their personal spaces can enrich their time and provide peace of mind. Shimizu, in particular, believes that French antiques are full of dreams, brimming with the beauty of their decorations, the patina of aged materials, and the irreproducible quality of century-old artisanal craftsmanship. Through themed exhibitions, talk shows, workshops, and more,
C'est le Poème aims to bring the timeless charm of antiques and crafts, as well as art, into people's lives, and to bring a sense of poetic abundance to their daily lives. This exhibition, marking C'est le Poème's debut project, features the works of third-generation lacquer artist Jihei Murase, in collaboration with Kamon Kogei, produced by Ari Murase. The exhibition offers a teatime experience of antiques and contemporary art, combining Jihei Murase's lacquerware with Art Deco antiques, such as silver pots and cutlery, beautifully decorated ceramics and glassware, to enhance a Parisian teatime experience. Shimizu, Jihei Murase, and Ari Murase have collaborated on projects such as the "Hayama Art Tea Ceremony" and the "The New Look of Tea: Jihei Murase Exhibition" held at the Embassy of Japan in the UK in December 2019, in an effort to promote Japanese art and traditions to the world. Toshio Shimizu was born in Tokyo in 1953. He graduated from the Department of French Literature, Faculty of Humanities, Tokyo Metropolitan University in 1977. After completing a master's degree at the Ecole du Louvre in 1983, he served as curator at the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum and artistic director at Art Tower Mito. In 1997, he founded the Toshio Shimizu Art Office. He has collaborated with companies and artists to install numerous public art pieces, including Kan Yasuda's "Ishinki" at Tokyo Midtown (Roppongi) and Daniel Burenne's "Ágrave; partir de la grande porte, tout le parvis: travail in situ Tokyo 2015/2016" at the Otemachi Financial City Grand Cube. He was awarded the Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by France in 2016. He launched "C'est le Poème" in 2020.
