"LUMIX MEETS TOKYO 2020 BY JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHERS 9," an exhibition featuring nine young photographers, is being held at Hillside Terrace in Daikanyama until December 1st, sponsored by photography magazine IMA. IMA selected the nine photographers: Akashika Maya, Hamada Yuji, Itami Go, KOSUKE, Mizutani Yoshinori, Yamamoto Wataru, Yokota Daisuke, Yoshida Kazuo, and Utsu Yumiko. Three of them shot their works using Panasonic's new LUMIX GM camera, which is sponsoring the exhibition. The photographs on display range from digital color works to black-and-white film works. Some works were created entirely without a camera, simply by manipulating film in the darkroom. While the subjects, styles, and fields of work are vastly different, the nine photographers are all young artists born after the 1970s, and are expected to make a name for themselves in the field of art photography in 2020. White balloons floated from the ceiling of the venue, and iPads, iPhones, and Lumix cameras were suspended from them. The magazine's app, "IMA+ARART," was installed on Apple devices, allowing users to view special AR effects by pointing them at selected photos. Compatible works were also displayed throughout the venue, and users could view them on their smartphones. The exhibition was also held in Paris during the French art photography event, "Paris Photo," attracting over 200 visitors to its opening day. The works were also exhibited and sold at the select shop Colette at the same time. While there are many young Japanese artists active overseas, it is rare for their work to be presented together in such a format, originating from Japan. While the works exhibited at Paris Photo tend to be market-conscious black-and-white or vintage, the photographs by these young artists were received as a unique collection of works. IMA Editor-in-Chief Ota Mutsuko said, "Until now, we've only introduced young artists in the magazine, but this time we were able to introduce them in a more three-dimensional way. We will continue to hold events like this in the future, so that the next Moriyama Daido or Araki Nobuyoshi will be born. We want to grow together with young artists."
