Koju, a 450-year-old incense master. Kyoto traditions create a new aesthetic sense of "fragrance" in Ginza.

Sep 8, 2025
Koju was founded in Kyoto during the Tensho era and is a venerable incense store that presented incense to the Imperial Palace. It served Hideyoshi and Ieyasu, and has supported Japan's incense culture. Over its long history of 450 years, Koju has not only preserved tradition, but has also evolved the nature of incense in line with the aesthetic sense of the times. Moving its base to Ginza marks a major milestone in opening up tradition to the modern era. Ginza is a place where tradition and innovation intersect. By taking root there, Koju has achieved the "sublimation and revitalization" of incense culture.

A "fragrant performance" that colors the space
The Ginza store is a tranquil underground space where visitors are instantly enveloped in the aroma the moment they step inside. For city dwellers accustomed to sound and light performances, the idea of designing a space with scent is refreshing and leaves a deep impression. Koju's Ginza store is not simply a place to sell incense as a product, but is presented as a "device" for urban sensibilities. It is like a contemporary art installation, designed to awaken the senses of each and every visitor.

Traditional beauty dwells in our products
Koju's products are imbued with Japan's unique incense culture. Their incense paste is a modern version of the traditional incense that has been loved at the Imperial Court and in tea ceremonies since ancient times. Their incense powders are designed to make incense more accessible to everyday life. Their incense pouches add a soft fragrance to clothing and spaces, emanating a traditional yet modern presence. All of their products respect long-established blending methods while incorporating designs that fit modern lifestyles. The act of burning incense calms the mind, creates a space, and enriches everyday life—a modern, aesthetically-driven approach.

A Place to Learn and Create Fragrance
KOJU not only delivers incense, but is also actively involved in experiencing it as a culture and passing it on to future generations. At the "Za Koju" workshop, participants blend their own incense and experience the profound world of incense. Furthermore, through our incense vessel design contest, we foster connections with designers and artisans with fresh sensibilities. These efforts elevate Koju beyond being simply a long-established brand, allowing it to function as a "cultural experiment center." This demonstrates the brand's commitment to evolving traditions into expressions that resonate with the modern age, rather than simply preserving them.

The "resonance of the past and present" of the new product "Kougu"
The new product "Kougu," now available nationwide, is a special fragrance that encapsulates Koju's history while also catering to modern sensibilities. Named after the tradition of offerings to the Imperial Court, the fragrance blends solemnity with lightness. Layering the soft, sweet fragrance of noble materials like agarwood and sandalwood simultaneously evokes feelings of both the past and the present. Not only is it perfect for relaxation, but it also makes a wonderful gift or self-care accessory for modern lifestyles. Kohmiya, which debuted alongside Kohju's expansion into Ginza, is a symbol that truly connects the past and the present.

Kohju's aesthetic sense extends into the future
Kohju does not confine incense to nostalgic traditions, but instead proposes a new aesthetic that resonates within modern life. Born in Kyoto and refined in Ginza, Koju's fragrances resonate with not only Japanese people but also foreign visitors to Japan as a "quiet luxury." Whether it's a gift or self-care, the fragrances are embraced across gender and borders. Its universal appeal is sure to continue to grow.
