The intersection of textiles and contemporary art: Fabric art festival "FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025" to be held in Fujiyoshida in November

Event Date:2025.11.22-12.14
Aug 1, 2025
FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025, an art festival where textiles and contemporary art intersect, will be held in Fujiyoshida City, Yamanashi Prefecture, from November 22nd to December 14th, 2025. Located at the foot of Mount Fuji, Fujiyoshida City is known as a textile production area with a history of over 1,000 years. FUJI TEXTILE WEEK, which exhibits contemporary art works in old factories, shopping districts, and vacant buildings scattered around the city, began in 2021 and this year marks its fourth year.

This event is a unique initiative themed around the fusion of the textile industry and contemporary art, in which artists active both in Japan and abroad collaborate with local textile businesses (looms) to create and present new works. The works on display go beyond the physical and structural aspects of the material of cloth, drawing attention to the invisible "flowing in the weave" of the fabric, such as the culture, memories, rhythms and local atmosphere that lie behind it.

The theme for 2025 is "What flows in the weave." Drawing inspiration from the underground waters of Fujiyoshida and the weave of fabric, art director Nanjo Fumio says, "You sense the fluidity in the fabric, and deep within its weave flow the lives of the people and the memories of the land." Through the artworks, the history and culture rooted in the region are presented from a new perspective.

The first wave of participating artists announced is nine groups from Japan and abroad. More information on participating artists will be released in the future. During the event, in addition to exhibitions, there will also be a select shop featuring local shops, restaurants, and galleries, textile workshops, and collaborative projects with students studying fashion and design, turning the entire town into a "fabric art festival." There will also be a select shop selling limited edition goods using Fujiyoshida textiles and items related to the artworks. One of the great attractions of this event is that visitors can take home an experience that goes beyond just viewing.

What kind of stories will the medium of "fabric," which effortlessly transcends the boundaries between production area and city, tradition and modernity, industry and expression... weave when it meets art? "FUJI TEXTILE WEEK 2025" will provide an inspiring experience for anyone interested in fashion and art, as it will serve as a starting point for thinking about the future of textiles.
