Jul 13, 2016
If you visit Paris, you'll want to visit the ateliers, the heart of each maison, and special places where precious archives are on display. This five-part report on a luxury Paris tour takes you to these special places and allows you to experience them with all five senses.

The first installment is a report on the prestigious Champagne winery, DEUTZ.

■ Visiting the Château of Deutz, a Prestigious Champagne Producer

Like an aperitif essential to a special dinner, our tour of luxury maisons begins with a visit to the prestigious Champagne producer, DEUTZ. Located 140km northeast of Paris, we exit the highway and admire the stunning views of the vineyards that stretch across the rolling hills along the Marne River. After passing the abbey where Dom Pérignon, said to have invented champagne, resided, Chateau Deutz comes into view.

We were greeted by Jean-Marc Deuts, the Deuts family's PR director, in the château's courtyard, and our visit to the winery began immediately.

After touring the state-of-the-art winery with its rows of stainless steel tanks, we then headed to the underground cellars, which, in stark contrast, have a historic feel. Descending a long spiral staircase about 50 meters, we found ourselves in the 3km-long underground cellars, built over 100 years ago. The cavernous cellars, kept at a constant temperature of 11°C and humidity of 95%, are filled with numerous bottles of Champagne, from aging vintages to old vintages. The sight of the countless bottles piled up in the cool darkness of the caves is truly impressive.

At Deutz, the winery, underground caves, and chateau are located on the slope, making the entire site almost maze-like. We thought we were deep underground, but after passing through a gentle passageway we returned to the chateau above ground, and before we knew it, a beautiful table had been set in the salon reminiscent of an aristocratic mansion.

Of course, the main course for lunch here was champagne!

The chef's special menu consisted of sautéed scallops as an appetizer, veal tenderloin as the main course, and a rich chocolate mousse cake for dessert. Each dish was accompanied by a champagne of a perfectly paired variety, and the course included both food and drinks, making for an experience that allowed us to fully enjoy champagne.

We were blessed with crisp, clear blue skies all day, and first enjoyed the flavors of France, the land of gourmet cuisine.

Feeling tipsy on the bus ride back, our hearts filled with excitement for the next day's itinerary, marking the start of our journey to visit luxury fashion houses.

Next time, we'll experience a flower bouquet lesson in Paris, the city of lights!
