Artist and sculptor Motohiko Kotani's scarf, inspired by Alexander McQueen's iconic "GOD SAVE McQUEEN" scarf, is on display at the brand's first boutique dedicated to its accessories collection, which opened in Roppongi Hills. The exhibit will run until April 21st. Kotani said of the work, "The collaboration began when McQueen contacted me. I was shown their scarf collection, and the scarf that made the biggest impression on me was the "GOD SAVE McQUEEN" scarf. Inspired by the phrase "God save the Queen," a hymn to England and the title of a Sex Pistols song, I imagined what would have happened if this scarf had been used on the Shroud of Turin, the garment said to have wrapped Jesus Christ in after his death." Regarding the brand, Otani commented, "Their designs incorporate biological forms and colors, and the sharp lines that stand out when worn are enhanced by a destructive element. I'm also drawn to the fact that their designs strongly evoke the condensed essence of the history and structure of British culture." He also expressed his enthusiasm for future collaborations, saying, "I feel that our respective directions share commonalities, so I hope to collaborate more closely." Otani was born in Kyoto in 1972. After studying sculpture at Tokyo University of the Arts, he has been active both in Japan and abroad. In 2003, he represented Japan at the Venice Biennale. His major solo exhibitions include "Hollow," held at Maison Hermès in 2009, and "Astral Perception," held at the Mori Art Museum in 2010.
